Afrofuturism project
The term Afrofuturism is defined as "a movement in literature, music, art, etc., featuring futuristic or science fiction themes which incorporate elements of black history and culture,". For this project, we took different unrecognized black figures from history and created a piece of Afrofuturism work based on them. On the right, you can see my digital art piece. It shows my character Robert Sengstacke Abbott. We spent class time using photoshop to create the final draft. For his hat, I made it a newspaper because he was the founder of the Chicago Defender, one of the most well known Black owned newspapers of the 20th century. As for the other colors and images, I took inspiration from other examples of Afrofuturism where they added futuristic elements, so I did the same. I added the African symbol for leadership on his face, and then I added equal signs to represent his fight for equality. I also gave him a dashiki under his coat, which is another traditional African outfit. Then I added the background with a city and the moon.
